Who's it for?

Anyone with previous summer walking experience who wants to be able to make the most of the British mountains in winter conditions.

Course Aim

This course is designed to give you the core skills to to be able to competently and safely enjoy the UK mountains, in winter conditions.

Whats Covered?

This course is designed to give you the skills to independently go walking in the British mountains in winter conditions and as such the following core skills and topics are covered:

  • Ice Axe and Crampon Use
  • Ice Axe Arrest/Braking
  • Equipment Selection
  • Winter Navigation
  • Avalanche Awareness and Avoidance
  • Route Planning
  • Emergency Snow Shelters

Ice Axes and Crampons are provided free of charge.

The key difference between our 2 day winter skills and our 5 day winter skills course is the amount of time available to consolidate your new skills. Those who attend our 2 day course will often head out for a few days afterwards on their own to practice their newly acquired skills. On our 5 day course we spend the extra time available to us to consolidate your learning in as wide a variety of snow conditions and areas as possible.

Course Ratio

This course will be run with up to a maximum of six people to one instructor, so that the instruction and coaching you receive can be tailored to your specific needs.

Course Price

£170 per person-  including free ice axe and crampon hire.
